Do you ever find yourself gazing at a sandglass, commonly known as an hourglass, and truly grasping the profound message it holds within its simple design? I suppose that with the passing of time, as we grow older, we gain wisdom, heightened awareness, and valuable life experience. When I recently came across one in a quaint gift shop, I initially admired it purely for its aesthetic charm and delicate craftsmanship. It was only a few hours later, when I mentioned it in passing to my Mom, that I began to truly understand the deeper meaning behind this timeless object. I chose not to dwell too much on this realization with her, as she is in her later years, preferring instead to engage in warm conversations about cherished memories from the past rather than looking back with curiosity wondering about what might have been.

From my perspective, each grain of sand symbolizes our journey through life. The glass starts full at the top when we are born, and the sand gradually filters down over the years. I have often been guilty of fixating on the sand at the bottom. However, since the glass contains a finite amount of sand, dwelling on the past hinders us from embracing opportunities and taking action on what lies ahead. The middle section of the glass is our present and they are fleeting moments which we need to embrace and grasp them. Once its gone its gone and if we remember that it will prompt us to prioritize the present and not waste precious moments.

The past obviously cannot be ignored; instead, it should be thoughtfully reflected upon through the lens of our choices and experiences. This is a very simple yet profound way of understanding it—an ideology suggesting that the way we interpret our past should, in some meaningful way, help shape and forge the future we create for ourselves. We cannot truly appreciate the present moment or live with genuine intention if we are constantly looking over our shoulders, trapped in a mindset where something or someone from our past is blamed for how we feel right now. That approach seems inherently contradictory because staying present often means that past triumphs or failures inevitably come to mind. Even as I write this, I realize that I will never have this exact opportunity again, highlighting the unique and fleeting nature of each moment.

The story of the footprints in the sand comes to mind now. Looking back on our journey, we see countless footprints—many belonging to people who joined us, even if only briefly. Reflecting on my own path, I envision numerous deepened prints, each representing the extra weight or burdens carried at different times. This image reminds me that my contributions leave a lasting mark on how I will be remembered. From an early age, my parents taught us to respect ourselves and our family name—it is something no one can ever take away. We are guardians of that name, and building our own legacy inspires the next generation to do the same. I believe this applies to all parents. With complete confidence, I can say that the challenges we have faced over the past five years have given our boys a true understanding of what family means and how to stand strong together as a unit.

The legacy we leave should be something to cherish, not just a story about Susan and Dave or a passing memory. I’ve often said that if this is the greatest challenge we face in life, we are truly fortunate. The present moment is all we ever truly experience—brief and fleeting—but if we remind ourselves to focus on the here and now, we can learn and grow from it.

Susan and I feel incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by such amazing friends, and as a direct result of this challenging episode, we have been blessed with even more wonderful people entering our lives. These individuals have touched us in the most extraordinary and meaningful ways, leaving a lasting impact that we deeply cherish. There are truly so many good-hearted people out there, and during this particular moment in our journey—when the weight of the sand feels especially heavy—we can look back and see how the footprints along the path have become lighter and more abundant, guiding us forward. Reflecting on the past serves as a powerful reminder that although this episode has been a significant inconvenience, it has ultimately brought us many unexpected benefits. We have grown stronger, more resilient, and more unified not only as friends but also as family. It also highlights the strength of the supportive community we are fortunate to live in, as well as an extended network beyond our immediate surroundings, which has been nothing short of humbling to experience.

The future holds many promising opportunities, both in the near term and beyond. I have some encouraging news to share, but I will wait for the right moment. The mystery remains unresolved and may or may not be solved. I can say with complete certainty that I have no immediate leads regarding the perpetrator. My advice is to encourage them to reflect deeply on their actions, ask themselves if the world owes them a favor, and consider how they want to be remembered or what legacy they wish to leave behind. I’m sure the family of those involved has their own perspective on this situation. It’s important to look back at the footprints left behind, then move forward with accountability. Certain reminders will linger, like the image of an hourglass—its remaining sand representing the time left in one’s journey. Do they want to waste their resources and time on this, or invest in their future? The money spent could have been better used, and the time lost cannot be replenished. It serves as a poignant reminder of how precious every moment truly is.
